Jan. 15th  ‘The Counsel Of Godly Folk’ By Dr Albert Odulele

Bible Reading:     Num. 27:21; 2 Kg. 4:1-7, 18-37

Prov. 24:6 ‘for by wise counsel you will wage your own war, and in a multitude of counsellors there is safety’

Wisdom can be acquired from godly men and women. ‘For by wise counsel you will wage war’. Anointed as Joshua was, he had to take counsel from Eleazar about warfare (Num. 27:21). Everyone must learn to take godly direction and advice.

Moses is arguably one of the most prominent figures of the Old Testament and God performed mighty signs and wonders through him. But he took the counsel of Jethro, his father-in-law. ‘Listen now to my voice; I will give you counsel, and God will be with you: Stand before God for the people, so that you may bring the difficulties to God’ Exod. 18:19

The bible tells of a prophet’s widow in a bad debt situation. She wisely took counsel from Prophet Elisha and was brought out of the dilemma (2 Kg. 4:1-7). Likewise, the Shunammite woman took news of her dead son to her prophet and received him back to life (2 Kg. 4:18-37).

Jairus told Jesus that his daughter was dead ‘but come and lay your hand on her and she will live.’ Mat. 9:18 The Centurion travelled a distance to tell Jesus of his dying servant, wanting his counsel and intervention (Mat. 8:6-13). ‘In the multitude of counsel there is safety’, humble yourself and seek wise counsel. No one knows it all.

  1. Pray that Christians will be active in your nation to promote justice, righteousness, honest government and wise rule. Prov. 11:10-11; Prov. 14:34; Tit. 3:8; Mat. 5:13-16
  2. Ask God to open your eyes and heart to the ‘wise and godly counsellors’ in your life. Jer. 3:12; 23:4; Jn. 10:3-5, 14

Thought for the day:

Who are the devout and godly people you have access to? Do you truly appreciate them for who they are?
